Hispanics/Latinos and Gun Violence
In 2004 in the U.S., we lost the lives of 8 people of Hispanic origin every day to gun-related injuries.
Homicide
Unlike the national leading cause of gun-related death, which is suicide, homicide is the leading cause of firearm-related death for Hispanics in the U.S. in 2004.
For ages 15-34, homicide is the second leading cause of death for Hispanics accounting for 2,285 deaths: the majority were Hispanic males (2,116 deaths).
Homicide is the third leading cause of death for youth aged 10-14; 68% of these homicides were committed with a gun.
For Hispanics of all ages in 2004, homicide was the seventh leading cause of death, of which gun-related homicide accounted for 70%.
Suicide
Suicide completed with a firearm was the third leading cause of death for Hispanics aged 15-24, accounting for the majority (47%) of all Hispanic suicides in this age bracket.
Children 14 and under
In 2004, the gun-related death toll of Hispanic children 14 and under in the U.S., was 56: Homicide accounted for 86%
